The short version
- "Free" coloring apps are usually paid for with ads, data, or both.
- Look for no ads, a clear price, a "Data Not Collected" label, and Family Sharing.
- One family subscription is often cheaper than paying ad-removal in several apps.
What "free" coloring apps cost
Here's what we found on popular color by number listings on November 1, 2026.
- Ads during coloring. The best-known apps all list Contains Advertising.
- Ads that stay after you pay. Happy Color sells a $7.99 purchase listed as "Remove ads (hint ads stay)."
- Weekly plans. Easybrain's Pixel Art lists a $7.99 weekly plan. Over a year, that adds up to about $415.
- Data. Those same apps list data used to track you on their privacy labels.
- Limits and currencies. Some apps use daily limits, coins, or hint tools you buy, which keeps a kid asking.
What to look for
- No ads at all, including "watch a video for a hint."
- A clear price. One or two plans, with the full renewal price and trial length shown.
- A real free start. Enough free pictures to know whether your kid likes it.
- Data Not Collected on the App Privacy label.
- A grown-ups check in front of purchases and links out of the app.
- Works offline, for car rides and flights.
- Family Sharing on the subscription, so one purchase covers every kid.
How Family Sharing works for subscriptions
Apple Family Sharing lets up to six people share purchases, including subscriptions, when the app maker turns it on. One grown-up subscribes, and every kid's iPhone and iPad in the family group gets it at no extra cost.
- Set up Family Sharing: in Settings, tap your name, then Family Sharing.
- Subscribe on any device in the family.
- Check that sharing is on: Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and make sure Share With Family is on.
- If a kid's device doesn't unlock right away, use the app's Restore purchases button on that device.
Family Sharing also gives you Ask to Buy, which sends a kid's purchase requests to you for approval.
Where Color Cafe fits
Color Cafe is ours. It has no ads anywhere. The first 10 pictures are free, with no account and no card. After that, Color Cafe Unlimited is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, after a 7-day free trial. Family Sharing is on, so one subscription covers every kid in the family. It collects nothing and works offline. See the pricing on the home page.
